I think this gives us a valuable insight into how great musicians can memorize so much so quickly. They use a highly associative, pattern oriented form of thinking and learning.

Horowitz sightread voraciously from the time he was a small child. Don't underestimate the value of being totally obsessive and spending a lot of time just DOING it!
